この曲を通常の「恋愛関係の終わり（＝別れ）」と捉える見方もあるようですが，私は歌詞を見た瞬間に相手が亡くなったのだと思いました。
というのも「最後の最後まで明るく燃え上がってる (Burning bright right till the end)」「これから写真を撮ったってお前の姿はないんだよな (Now you’ll be missing from the photographs, missing from the photographs)」「好きだった服を着て眠ってるのに，そいつをみんな燃やしちゃうのが残念で仕方ない (Sleeping in the clothes you love, It’s such a shame we had to see them burn, shame we had to see them burn)」などの箇所が「死」を連想させるためです。
勿論これらの箇所も，恋愛関係の終わりと取れなくはないので，単に主人公が別れた恋人への未練を語っているのかもしれませんが，それでも私には主人公が亡くなった親しい誰かに語りかけているように思われます。
